Copyright law falls under the umbrella of Intellectual Property which also includes Patents, Trademarks, Industrial Design and Trade Secrets. Each one of these sectors deals with a different type of protection for various types of works.

When dealing with musical works, it’s important to understand what constitutes a musical work before we can determine how it is protected through copyright law. The Canadian Copyright Act (for example) defines musical works as: “any work of music or musical composition, with or without words, and includes any compilation thereof.”

Interestingly, not all “musical” works actually fall under this category with regards to registration. Some may fall under the categories of “Sound Recordings” or “Performers’ Performances”.

In order to establish which category your musical work should be registered in, you must determine exactly what you are trying to protect. Some examples of what may be protected include:

a) lyrics: protected as a literary work
b) musical composition in any format: protected as a musical work
c) a specific recording of a song: protected as a sound recording
d) if you are a singer, your specific recorded performance of a song: protected as a performer’s performance

Now that you have determined which category your music falls into, let’s look at how to protect the copyright.

A common misconception is that people need to pay a third party to copyright their music.
However – the exclusive right of copyright (including the rights to produce, reproduce, distribute and publish the work) is automatically granted under Copyright Law to the author of a work once it is put in a fixed form.

In other words, when you record an original musical composition that you created onto a CD, it is copyrighted and you own the rights. However, unless you can prove you are the original creator of the musical work, you may run into expensive and time-consuming legal problems defending your work in the event of infringement.

This is why registering your work is often recommended, especially in our digital era where music is often showcased on websites and accessed by millions of people.

What registering a copyright does is it creates third party time-stamped proof of the time of creation. As such, should someone infringe on your work, you will have a registration certificate proving your work was completed before theirs. Without the registration, it can be tricky coming up with acceptable proof that you created the song first.

For instance, let’s say I create a musical composition and play if for a friend who is also a musician. They then (not intentionally) create a new song, and accidentally steal my melody. They finish their song, register it with a copyright registration service, and get picked up by a label. Even though I was the first one to make the song, it might be very difficult for me to prove that I played them the song before they made their composition if I did not first register the work.

As such, to build proof of your ownership (and to maintain friendships), it’s generally a good idea to register your music before showcasing it publicly.

In figure skating, music is part of the routine, and it helps us capture the essence and the flow of the art. If done correctly it can wow the judges and the crowd, creating an emotional moment that no one will ever forget. And boy does it look good on video and TV. Still, figure skaters make it look easy in competition, but it is far from an easy sport. It takes years and years of training and practice to operate at that precision level. It takes strong legs and strong muscles, the kind of normal people don’t even know exist.

Of course, every figure skater knows they exist, because they ache after every practice and sometimes when you go to bed at night your legs shake and you get muscle cramps and wake out of a deep sleep screaming and grabbing your leg, trying to bend your toes back to stop your calf muscles from ripping off the bone. That’s something that the fans have ever seen and don’t understand. But every athlete, every figure skater knows.

With all this grueling pain, agony, and the setbacks that come with injury due to the fact that you are working under extreme conditions and asking your body to do things that human bodies were never designed for, it is amazing how many great Olympic figure skaters come from the United States and take top billing and gold medals and bring them back home.

Getting through those years of practice isn’t easy, but training to music can help. When a figure skater is in the zone they float across the ice as their bodies flow in perfect harmony with the music, it is a real and alive human sculpture in motion, dancing to the music and skating across the perfect ice. Gosh, I wish you could understand the emotion, the feelings, the energy, the crowds, the judges, the training, and of course the music. Please consider all this.

Let me burst the music bubble right now, those strange meaningless lines, dots and symbols are the language of music that is the key that unlocks the door to your favorite songs and bands.

There are really two types of drum sheet music.

1. Traditional Drum Music Notation

2. Drum Tabs found on the internet

Drumming Tabs

These tabs have become very popular over the last 10 years and you will find them exclusively online at drum, guitar and bass sites mainly. They have become so popular because the author can produce the tabs for free and are notated without the need to buy expensive software. Anyone viewing the tabs needs no software at the other end and thus creates a great partnership. Tabs represent the division of the beat with small dashes, these dashes also serve as the five line stave. The drum elements are written with circles or the letter o, hi-hats and cymbals are read with a x. Each drum or cymbal is written almost in the same way as traditional notation, I say almost!

The main problem with drum tabs is that it is very hard to write or indeed read the music with any degree of accuracy. The biggest problem is representing rhythmic values. I have had many students bring tabs that they want to learn, as a drum teacher your hands are tied unless you know the song and can work out the rhythms of the drum part elements. There is however a far easier way to read drum sheet music….

Learning To Read Traditional Drum Notation

Tradition tabs are written on sheet music manuscript paper or with notation software. The draw back to software is that they are usually expensive to buy and a steep learning curve is required to master the software. Some software requires the end user to also have the program to see the music. Other programs allow the drum music to be published with PDF programs which makes life easier for the end user. The obvious plus is that the drum tabs are much clearer and far easier to read than Word Document tabs.

If you visit the site below you will find lots of examples of drum music written out using dedicated software. You will also find lessons that teach you how to read drum music. It’s actually very easy! Basically each element of the drum set has its own line or space. The notes towards the bottom of the five line stave are for low drums such as the bass drum. Generally notes at the top of the stave are for the cymbals. The notes themselves look like piano music and each symbol represents a different note length, this allows you to understand the exact drum rhythm of the music.

This is what is best about these tabs the rhythms can be precisely notated. If you are a drummer learning to play you need to develop your skills when you read drum rhythms. It is an essential tool for any musician, with a little effort anyone can learn to read notation very easily and it will open up your world to the music you love and want to play.

Believe it or not, those rock pianists started as classical musicians and decided that a more vibrant style was in order. When learning to play rock on piano, don’t throw away the book, but look past the script and feel free to express yourself. Get on board for a wild ride and never hold back when it comes to expressing the rock music in your.

Rock is a close relative to blues piano. Both are based on a 12-bar pattern that repeats. Rock on piano does not require continuous practice of the scales and notes. If you want to be comfortable learning to play rock , you might want to try playing in the blues style. For the ultimate playing experience, try playing both with sheet music and by ear. This music requires knowledge of certain chords. Learn those chords and then get ready to have some fun.

Now that you are ready to do a little freewheeling, let’s add to the fun. Traditional piano instructors insist that students are sure to practice playing the piano slowly. This constant drilling can serve to inhibit the rock pianist. When practicing to play rock, try being a bit more relaxed and work on tempo. This type of music requires great finger play.

Rock tempo is vibrant and necessitates more touch and feel than other types of play. We do not recommend practicing as fast as possible, but it is not an entirely bad concept. Get those fingers involved in the tempo and your practice sessions will never be boring.

If you need help developing the right tempo, get some cds background music that features other musicians. Try to play along but even if you cannot, you can get a sense of the finger speed you need to play rock. Today’s DVD and online software courses are terrific for learning to play piano rock. You will have all the sounds you need and can learn at your own pace. Give it a try.
